No man is an island, as poet John Donne observed some 400 years ago. My mate Dave Madagascar might disagree, but hey.

My dad wasn’t a poet, but he used to say “It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know” and that’s even more true in these days of infinite connectivity and overwhelming digital noise.

Here are some actionable tips to get you working with the right people, right now:

  • Set a regular connection habit – I reach out to ten “new” people each day on LinkedIn who could become TSP members, partners or affiliates.
  • Every day, join at least one Facebook Group which matches your business and interests.
  • Go to at least one networking event a month, and with a clear objective to meet relevant people
  • Use a CRM to keep track of key relationships and interactions. I use Zoho, but there are many others.
  • Tag and segment contacts so you can stay in touch more effectively. In our world for example, we send different messages to business coaches compared with personal trainers.

So you need connection habits, but ultimately it’s not the quantity, it’s the quality of your relationships which matter.

Link up with people who you think you can genuinely help, and add value to their life and work.

Guess what? They’ll help you back!
