So, how can you pack the important things in before lunch, leaving you with a graceful glideslope to contentment in the afternoon?
1: Schedule tight timelines for jobs
Ask: What’s the minimum viable time (MVT) I need to do this? Make sure you have something else scheduled immediately after a crucial task, so you can’t run over.
As Parkinson’s Law states, “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
Abraham Lincoln agreed when he claimed, “Give me 6 hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first 4 sharpening the axe.” Get in. Do it. Get out.
2: Turn off alerts and notifications
If you’re going to go feral at your workload in the mornings, you’ve plenty of time in the afternoons to surf social media and respond to emails, right?
There’s nothing worse than breaking off to handle a low-level distraction, for halting or reversing your flow.
It’ll take you whole minutes to get back on the job, and you might have forgotten that great idea that was just about to pop.
3: Plan two or three key tasks – no more
The biggest killer of action is procrastination caused by overwhelm.
It’s not like you’ve got a boss breathing down your neck, filling your In Tray. You created this whole game in the first place, so it’s pretty silly giving YOURSELF too much to do, right?
List A, B & C on your to-dos for the day. No more. The rest can wait till tomorrow.
