Around my community of 7,500 skilled coaches and consultants, I see more than a few misunderstandings about client attraction.Â
[Also known as Marketing, or The Thing You Need To Master Otherwise You Have A Hobby Not A Business.]
Here’s a Holy Trinity of Horrors that will keep you poor, unheard and miserable forever if you don’t fix them:
1:Â Playing It Safe. Afraid to offend, challenge or rock anyone’s boat, you sink deep into the gloopy swamp of mediocrity, gasping for breath and blending into your surroundings with all the other timid, invisible so-called experts. If your writing, videos and offers bear more than a passing resemblance to the stuff your ideal clients have already seen and rejected, be prepared to wait a long, long time for your next paycheck.
Be funny, weird, controversial but above all…BE DIFFERENT.
When you need to stand out, different is better than better.Â
2: Trash Talking. OK, so you got an angry political opinion. You can’t stand some famous person. You don’t believe a widely accepted truth. So what? we don’t wanna hear it. Not from you, not from nobody!
Gossip is the go-to for lazy, low-status lounge warriors masquerading as experts. Sure, they’re expert in trashing their reputation and ending up with three-fifths of f**k-all instead of a real business. Great job!
Instead, how about crafting captivating content to show your readers how you help people just like them solve their biggest problem and change their lives? And, of course, about how your solution is the ONLY way to do that effectively.
In the fight for useful attention, upbeat beats downbeat every time.
3: Careless Work. You don’t need a Masters Degree in Literature, but you do need to write proper. (See what I did there). With so many spell-checkers and Grammarly-style tools at your disposal, there’s no excuse for shoddy prose.
Not only that, but if you’re including graphics, there’s a baseline below which you’ll lose all your creds. Hideous design resembling a five-year-old’s first login to Photoshop is never going to draw people to you. Again, so many free tools are ready and waiting, and we all know it.
If you’re way behind the curve with your online appearance, we’ll assume you haven’t bothered learning the important stuff either, suggesting the rest of your work might be subpar too. Don’t let lousy packaging devalue the gold inside.
How you do one thing is how you do everything.
SUMMARY
Once you learn to avoid this stuff, you’ve got a sound foundation for your personal brand. Then you can start to leverage your glorious skills to the max, working less but creating more impact and revenue.
That’s a topic for another day, and that day is near.Â
Love you lots
Jonny
