<p>He reminded me recently of one of the great truths of our existence:</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;You can’t build a beautiful future if you haven’t worked through the burdens of your past.&#8221; </strong></p>
<p>Many things can weigh you down, forming baggage that you drag along from one year to the next:</p>
<ul>
<li>Resentment at what went wrong</li>
<li>Feelings of inadequacy</li>
<li>Cynicism borne from failure</li>
<li>Offence at something somebody once said</li>
<li>Replaying catastrophe</li>
</ul>
<p>Everything you thought, felt and experienced to date CAN inform what happens from now.</p>
<p>But it doesn&#8217;t have to.</p>
<p><strong>Today is a new day, and your chance to disconnect from what limited you yesterday.</strong></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Someone I know just called me out for having 4,600 Facebook &#8220;friends&#8221;.</p>
<p>He asked, how can anyone possibly have that many friends?</p>
<p>Thing is, FB has appropriated the &#8220;F&#8221; word when it really means &#8220;connections&#8221;.</p>
<p>Much though I appreciate, respect and value my gang of 4.6k, only about 20 are true friends, of course.</p>
<p>The rest are either people who&#8217;ve been attracted into my world, or those who I&#8217;ve selected as persons of interest.</p>
<p>As a coach, trainer or therapist, worthwhile connections present the potential for a mutual exchange of value.</p>

<ul>
<li>What do you mean by &#8220;big&#8221;?</li>
<li>Big enough!</li>
<li>The biggest in the world!</li>
<li>What about stress?</li>
<li>I can only handle so much business&#8230;</li>
</ul>
<p>Then, my friend and sales-coach Jason Kannigan hit the nail on the head &#8211;</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Get a number, amigos&#8230;build to the plan and then expand the size of the plan. &#8220;As much money as I can get&#8221; is no target at all.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>BOOM!</p>
<p>In business, targets always need to be definable, measurable and achievable.</p>
<p><strong>But first, targets need to EXIST! </strong></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had an almost biblical revelation a couple of days ago.</p>
<p>As the warm spring sunshine streamed through the blinds into my apartment, I decided to play something. I often do, as there&#8217;s a grand piano in my lounge.</p>
<p>This time was different.</p>
<p>An unfamiliar voice in my head said, why not video it, and stream it live to the Jonny Hates Marketing FB Group? It was the voice of a dark monster, who&#8217;d clearly never heard of performance anxiety, keeping to the topic, or fear of looking stooopid.</p>
<p>Anyway, the monster won, and 3 minutes later, the phone&#8217;s on a tripod, I&#8217;m on my upholstered stool, and people are watching and listening to me banging out an 80s rock hit.</p>
<p>4 minutes later still, the phone&#8217;s in my pocket and I&#8217;m off to town.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the revelation:</strong></p>
<p>Within 48 hours, 1300 people had watched <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSuccessParty/permalink/1018088378345066/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>the video,</strong></a> over 50 had commented and hundreds reacted.</p>
<p>Jeez! That made it my most-watched, most engaged live video so far, and that&#8217;s after a year of posting live shows at least twice a week.</p>
<p>One of three things just happened:</p>
<ol>
<li>I&#8217;m a world-class piano player and dazzled everyone with my brilliance (Unlikely)</li>
<li>Music&#8217;s more interesting than coaching, even to coaches (Possible)</li>
<li>People like a 3D human story (Bingo!)</li>
</ol>
<p>Yep, that&#8217;s the revelation.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re a coach and you don&#8217;t have a signature programme, you&#8217;re missing a trick.</p>
<p>A whole box of tricks, in fact.</p>
<p><strong>Selling coaching sessions, even in &#8220;packages&#8221;, makes the business of marketing your service much harder than it needs to be.</strong></p>
<p>I recently wrote about the 10 reasons you need a signature programme, and here are the top three from that list:</p>
<p>1 &#8211; A programme gives you something tangible to sell. People like to buy products, not ideas.</p>
<p><span class="text_exposed_show"><span class="text_exposed_show">2 &#8211; It&#8217;s easier to market and understand. &#8220;The Client Attraction Blueprint&#8221; is like labelling a tin &#8220;Beans&#8221;, whereas &#8220;Get coaching here!&#8221; is like labelling it &#8220;food&#8221;.</span></span></p>
<p>3 &#8211; Your ideal clients have common problems and desires. You can therefore deliver a great-value group programme, also massively scaling your income.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are all 180 seconds away from not being alive.</p>
<p><strong>That&#8217;s how long you&#8217;ll last if you stop breathing. </strong></p>
<p>And yet, we mostly leave that critical function to our subconscious brain, which triggers our diaphragm into action and keeps us on the right side of forever, for now.</p>
<p>The power of conscious breathing is clear and easy to demonstrate:</p>
<p>Do this now:</p>
<ol>
<li>Breathe in for 3 seconds, as deep as you can</li>
<li>Hold for 1 second</li>
<li>Breathe out for 3 seconds</li>
<li>After 3 seconds, repeat</li>
<li>Do this 3 times</li>
</ol>
<p>Wow!</p>
<p>Clarity, energy and power are 30 seconds away.</p>
<p><strong>And that&#8217;s 150 seconds closer than death, so it&#8217;s not all bad news. </strong></p>

<p><strong>This means I treat the reader&#8217;s time as more valuable than mine.</strong></p>
<p>So, I don&#8217;t waste words.<br />
I don&#8217;t waste attention.<br />
I get to the point.<br />
I edit out fluff.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the best way to write, right?</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve started to close my ears and eyes to many militant atheists, anti-smokers and vegans, for example.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why it was so refreshing to meet the founder of Intelligent Eating, Adam Stevens yesterday on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSuccessParty/permalink/1015940848559819/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Jonny Hates Marketing Marketing Show.</strong></a></p>
<p>Adam&#8217;s been on a plant-based diet for years now, and shows others how to survive and thrive without killing animals.</p>
<p>Yet, he accepts that it&#8217;s almost impossible to be a strict vegan without making yourself (and everyone else) crazy.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s also a master social marketer, with huge, devoted following on Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>By writing stuff which entertains, intrigues and engages, he&#8217;s able to reach far more people with his message than if he were ranting or lecturing. </strong></p>
<p>When Adam speaks, others listen.</p>

					<description><![CDATA[Go Be Nice!]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In spectacular news yesterday, the UK Home Secretary has been forced to resign, following the debacle over the planned deportation of people who&#8217;ve been living in the UK for over 50 years.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how the BBC described the nasty mess:</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;The Windrush generation settled legally in post-war Britain and automatically got the right-to-remain in the UK &#8211; but the UK government did not keep a record of everyone in that position. Some people who do not have the paperwork to prove they are in the UK legally have been detained, lost their jobs and denied access to medical care.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>This horrendous, callous treatment of ordinary people is another example of the increasing lack of kindness in modern society.</p>
<p>When we interact with friends, family, colleagues and clients, we should ask these questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>Are we treating them as we would want to be treated ourselves, given a similar situation?</li>
<li>Have we checked all the facts which led us to now behave in a certain way?</li>
<li>Before sanctions or punishments are meted out, are there any other more palatable measures which would achieve the same result?</li>
<li>What&#8217;s the kindest way of responding to a particular problem?</li>
<li>How important or necessary is it that we react at all to the circumstances before us?</li>
</ul>
<p>Our government &#8211; any government &#8211; has more pressing problems which it should have been dealing with yesterday, rather than this expressly shameful matter.</p>
<p>My quest is to bring more understanding, clarity and calm to the world through coaching, and through helping others to coach in the same way.</p>

					<description><![CDATA[Be Nice By Default!]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We live in a world where slagging people off in public is the new norm.</p>
<p>Listening to comedian Michelle Wolf &#8220;roasting&#8221; the 45th POTUS and his press secretary last week, I felt a little sad.</p>
<p>Not for Mr Trump &#8211; he gives as bad as he gets &#8211; but for a world where it&#8217;s seemingly ok to be as rude and personally offensive as you want about anybody, anytime.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d rather conform to the old adage:</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;If you haven&#8217;t got anything nice to say, keep quiet&#8221; </strong></p>
<p>Of course, &#8220;nice&#8221; can mean a variety of things:</p>
<ul>
<li>Constructively critical</li>
<li>Complimentary</li>
<li>Saving a friend from a bad decision</li>
<li>Motivational</li>
<li>Uplifting</li>
<li>Loving</li>
</ul>
<p>And, just like anger harms the angry more than the victim, wanton rudeness says more about the issuer than the receiver.</p>
<p><strong>That&#8217;s why I&#8217;ve declared this &#8220;Kindness Week&#8221; in the Jonny Hates Marketing Facebook Group.</strong></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s go all out to praise, encourage and promote anything and anyone that&#8217;s struck a chord with us, shall we?</p>

<p>Even I sometimes wonder if the FB bubble will burst, and we&#8217;ll be back to where we were BF (Before Facebook).</p>

<li>Facebook has changed the world, and for the better</li>

					<description><![CDATA[Small + Small = Big!]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a mural on the wall of my gym which says:</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Success is the sum of many small actions, repeated daily&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>In the fitness arena, that means a bunch of reps in a bunch of sets in a bunch of routines.</p>
<p>Applied to business and self-development, Robin Sharma says it best:</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Your days are your life in miniature&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>You might remember Dave Brailsford as the guy who transformed British cycling. He came in recognising that nobody, no team, could suddenly leapfrog the competition and win everything overnight.</p>
<p>Instead he looked for <strong>“the aggregation of marginal gains.” </strong>His belief was that if he improved every area related to cycling by just 1 percent, then those small gains would add up to remarkable results.</p>
<p>So, he optimised the nutrition of riders, their weekly training program, the ergonomics of the bike seat, and the weight of the tires. Then he searched for the pillow that offered the best sleep, the most effective type of massage gel, and he taught riders the best way to wash their hands to avoid infection.</p>
<p>He looked for 1 percent improvements everywhere.</p>
<p>Result: Two straight Tour de France victories and 70% of the cycling gold medals at London 2012!</p>
<p>What all this means to you is that grandiose goals are great &#8211; and necessary &#8211; but it&#8217;s the single, granular improvements that will inch you towards them.</p>
<p>If you can be even 1% better today than you were yesterday, it&#8217;ll add up to something amazing.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nature abhors a vacuum, and here&#8217;s a story from <a href="https://www.stuartcarter.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Stuart Carter</strong> </a>about why deliberately creating one could be a really smart way to drive change.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;A while ago I was in a gallery, and mentioned to the assistant.</em></p>
<p><em>“Yeah… we’re kind of looking for something to go above the fireplace. We’re not super-happy with the picture that’s there at the moment. It’s ok, but it’s not brilliant…”</em></p>
<p><em>Her advice was swiftly given…</em></p>
<p><em>“When you get home, take the picture down straight away. Create a vacuum, and it will be filled.”</em></p>
<p><em>And she was right. With the big blank space staring at us it was a matter of days before the perfect inspiration struck.</em></p>
<p><em>The same is true in everything. We put up with ‘adequate’ because it’s there. It’s easy. It doesn’t need thinking about.</em></p>
<p><em>But when we discard the ‘adequate’, it makes room for the great.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Think about which of your habits, products, colleagues and customers are performing a merely &#8220;adequate&#8221; role in your life and business right now.</p>
<p><strong>Maybe you&#8217;re better off with a vacuum instead of the space they&#8217;re taking up.</strong></p>

					<description><![CDATA[Be a Little Bit Better!]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When Vilfredo Pareto published his 1903 book, <strong><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manual-Political-Economy-Critical-Variorum/dp/0199607958" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Manual of Political Economy,</a></strong> he wrote about a discovery later to become a byline for business success: <strong>the 80/20 principle.</strong></p>
<p>He wasn&#8217;t literally saying that 80% of anything happens to or is caused by 20% of the players. He was describing the idea that the majority of rewards go to a minority of participants in any field.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a winner-takes-all aspect to much of human endeavour, and here&#8217;s how that holds true in your life and business:</p>
<ul>
<li>Any achievement &#8211; writing a best-selling book, scoring a high-paying job, becoming known as an authority &#8211; makes further achievement more likely</li>
<li>Your success is affected by limits of customer attention, spending capability and their desire for action. Capture that once and you will likely do it again and again.</li>
<li>You don&#8217;t have to crush the competition for your audience. When 10 companies pitch for a job, only one gets it. Being 1% better gets 100% of the result.</li>
<li>People and businesses who are consistently 1% better will dominate their respective fields.</li>
<li>Your 1% edge comes from being unafraid to take risks, from being original and grabbing our attention with your fantastic creations.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Don&#8217;t envy the 1%. BE the 1%.</strong></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As <a href="http://www.robinsharma.com/">Robin Sharma</a> says, all change is hard at first, messy in the middle and beautiful at the end!</p>
<p>And yet the only way you will achieve anything of note is to cast away from your old, non-productive habits and set course to your bountiful future with a new mindset.</p>
<p>The Space Shuttle uses more fuel in the first 60 seconds than it does in all its orbits after that. Why? It has to escape the gravitational forces holding it down to earth.</p>
<p>The pull you feel from your current habits is strong and hard to break away from, but once you reach escape velocity it gets easier, if sometimes a little messy.</p>
<p>And orbiting in the infinite space of new thoughts, new habits and new outcomes is worth every pound of fuel you used to start with.</p>

<p>“I’d never spend £400 on a pair of glasses”, say the optical sales staff. And so they put up resistance on behalf of the client.</p>
<p>They never once think that the client might <em>love</em> the opportunity of spending £400 on a pair of glasses.</p>
<p>We all spend smart money and we all spend stupid money, and most importantly we all get the choice of what to spend it on.</p>
<p>Just for fun, price one of your products extravagantly expensively and see who wants to buy it.</p>
<p>You might be surprised at how many customers are delighted with the value you&#8217;re offering.</p>

					<description><![CDATA[Plan B is key!]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>It&#8217;s not them, It&#8217;s you! (How not to have an epic fail when you are trying to get money for your business).</strong></p>
<p>Frustrated Business Owner (FBO): &#8220;We&#8217;ve been let down by the bank and haven&#8217;t got the funding we were expecting.&#8221;</p>
<p>Me: &#8220;What&#8217;s happened?&#8221;</p>
<p>FBO: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been waiting months for the bank to come back and approve our funding, and now it&#8217;s causing us cash flow problems so we can&#8217;t move forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>Me: &#8220;How much do you need, what do you need it for and when do you need it? Who else have you approached?&#8221;</p>
<p>FBO: &#8220;We needed £50k and we needed it two months ago&#8230;we didn&#8217;t approach anyone else!</p>
<p>If your business needs money, get more than one option lined up and work them simultaneously, not consecutively! Banks should never be your last resort, no matter how great your relationship is. It may be the right offer for you, but make sure you have the time to wait for a decision.</p>
<p>If time is an issue, there&#8217;s a huge alternative finance market out there with flexible and innovative funders who can turn things around really quickly.</p>
<p>Never let the banks forget it&#8217;s you not them that&#8217;s driving your business.</p>

<p>Because their &#8220;right thing” is being filtered through:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Their Blueprint</strong> – what they’ve learnt in their upbringing</li>
<li><strong>Their Environment</strong> – the external pressures placed on us</li>
<li><strong>Their Ego</strong> – who they believe themselves to be</li>
</ul>
<p>If we transcend our Blueprint, Environment and Ego, we can make better decisions that benefit all humankind instead of serving our prejudices and fears.</p>
<p>Will we commit to doing <em>what’s right?</em> Not just what’s right for us, right now?</p>
