Dump the rubbish!

Author and contrarian madman Aubrey de Grey sends a warning to us all when he says:

Don’t cling to a mistake just because you spent a lot of time making it.

And in your 21st century coaching or therapy business, this might mean:

1: Dumping your massive magnum opus of a downloadable course that nobody ever bought
2: Rethinking your favourite client avatar if you can’t find enough of them to make a living
3: Resetting your branding and messaging that’s attracting nobody to your community
4: Closing down your big, expensive office/clinic/studio and delivering your work online
5: Turning away from those who don’t believe in you, support you or energise you

In summary, the past is done and irretrievable.

All you can do is work in the present to change your future.

Is This You?

As author James Clear says,

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”

And that’s such a simple way to think about whether you are being useful, or just keeping busy.

Think of the person you’d like to be in 5 years’ time, and ask:

Am I reacting like they would to this event?

If I do it this way, will I ever become like them?

If not this, what would they be doing right now?

Does doing this make me feel like I am that person already?

What needs to happen for me to become that person by that time?

It’s your duty to support a viable candidate.

Don’t waste your vote.

Jonny

PS – Thanks for your submissions for future DBTs. We’ve had over 40 great pieces, and we’ll be selecting the best in the next couple of days. Watch this space!

Beyond hard work!

We can all visualise success and what it will feel like when we get there. Cars, houses, holidays, cash, acclaim, contentment…add your own to the list.

What’s harder to visualise, and even harder to commit, is what it takes to get us there.

The success gap is the distance between what you want and what you’re prepared to give to get it.

I read a great quote from the manager of a small, underfunded IndyCar racing team. This is a sport where hundreds of millions will get you to the top, and this team is working with tens. They compensate for their relative lack of budget with uncommon commitment, blood, sweat and tears. Here’s what the guy said:

This team is not just working to survive; it is fighting to succeed.

And there’s the thing: Maybe its not just about how hard you work.

It’s about how hard you fight, and why.

You sound great?

Cliched but true: People listen to HOW you speak way more than they listen to WHAT you say.

With that in mind, you’d better work on these 7 elements of a great voice:

Register – We vote for politicians with lower voices – (applies especially to women)
Timbre – Rich is better. Think Anthony Hopkins vs Russell Brand
Prosody – Horrible end of the sentence going up?
Pace – Slow down – you babble, you lose.
Silence – Can be very powerful
Pitch – The higher you go, the angrier you sound!
Volume – Shouting all the time = Sodcasting. Speak softly but make a big noise.

Pick up your mobile right now and talk to the voice recorder for 30 seconds on your favourite subject.

Play it back.

How did you sound?

Just do it!

When you’re planning a project, a campaign or a product launch, the hardest part is getting it started. The impossible part is getting it perfect, because it’s never perfect.

Nobody expects perfect, and in any case everyone’s definition of perfect is different.

By definition, if the hardest part is getting started, it gets easier after that. Smart folks like Nike’s ad team, Richard Branson and many others have given us this good stuff:

“Just do it”
“Screw it, let’s do it”
“JFDI”

Once you’re underway, anything you’ve done can be tested, adjusted, tweaked or plain rebuilt to get it working better and better.

Ready. Fire. Aim.

Which are you?

Consuming and Creating

We are all consumers – it’s effortless. It’s much harder to be a creator, which is why not everyone takes the trouble.

Your importance and impact is defined by how much value you create, never by how much you consume.

Creating something so compelling, so irresistible that we all want to consume it is one of the key markers of a successful life.

Nobody remembers the consumer, but the creator’s legacy lives forever.

Get started on your beautiful creation right away. Consumers around the world are waiting.

[Postscript: creating something of universal appeal usually gives you more leverage as a consumer too, if that’s your thing.]

What, when and where!

Beyond the democratic freedoms of speech, expression and movement, there are others that you can choose for yourself.

Financial Freedom: regularly creating more income than you choose to spend.

Time Freedom: from choosing when you work, and when you don’t.

Location Freedom: from being able to work anywhere in the world you choose.

All those freedoms come as part of the package when you build your own recurring revenue business. Enduring and predictable wealth, a four-hour work week and a life of travel and mobility are all on the agenda once you get your customers to pay you with regular subscriptions.

All that’s needed is for you to decide that it’s not acceptable to be struggling for one-off sales and working morning till night in the same stuffy office.

Then choose to do it all differently.

Your choices, your freedoms.

How To Sell Anything to Anyone!

Here’s a great takeaway from the brilliant Oren Klaff, author of “Pitch Anything”, and one of the world’s top fundraisers for business ventures.

He talks about the three things that make people invest in, or buy what you have to offer.

People want what they can’t have

People chase that which moves away from them, and

People only value that which they pay for

So, when you’re selling something, you’d better make sure it’s scarce, time-limited and sold at the right price, not given away.
